Visitors to Bowen Island typically come to for a quiet, relaxing experience. However, there’s no shortage of things to do around this forested haven at the entrance to Howe Sound.
Only a 20-minute ferry ride from West Vancouver, Bowen Island pleases sporty types with varied activities including, hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, swimming, and golf.
Bowen Island also has its share of artists and art galleries, as well as live theatre and concerts. Local landmarks like the Bowen Island Museum, Davies Orchard, and Alderwood Farm bring the island’s rustic spirit to life.
Laidback dining and shopping round out the picture at Snug Cove, the heartbeat of this tight-knit community, with its ferry terminal and marinas.
Hilly Bowen Island is perfect for mountain biking or hiking, through both maintained and backwoods trails, or narrow winding roads. Try the ascent up to Mount Gardner, Bowen Island’s tallest peak, or take a break for bird-watching and a picnic while circling Killarney Lake.
Bikes can be rented off the island from many Vancouver stores, which can then be brought over on BC Ferries or water taxis.
The Bowen Island Golf Club offers nine holes with a par-35, 3,075-yard layout, plus lessons and boutique tournaments.
Interested in kayaking? Rent a kayak in Snug Cove and take a journey through the calm waters of the island either on a solo trip or a guided tour. Tunstall Bay offers a beautiful viewing of the sunset, while Keats Island and Gambier Islands prove challenging for more adventurous kayakers.

Artisan Square, just above Snug Cove, showcases many of Bowen Island’s finest artists. Admire the local paintings and sculptures displayed at Arts Pacific Gallery and the Gallery at Artisan Square, or browse through the gilded creations at Gilt or the jewelry of Christie Grace.
Check out the Write On! Bowen Festival in July. It features literary workshops and acclaimed authors like Spider Robinson and Linda L. Richards. It’s easy to attend live theatre performances staged by Theatre-on-the-Isle (TOTI) as well as other local companies. The Christmas Craft Fair in December sells seasonal gifts and other trinkets by Bowen Island artisans. Frequent concerts, ranging from all different types of music, spice up life on Bowen Island throughout the year.
